In the Gate from where you enter towards the Harbor, outer walls contain the logo of the British while you see VOC, the logo of the Dutch East India Company on the inside walls. The Bread Fruit Tree inside the Fortis believed to be the oldest Bread Fruit Tree in Sri Lanka. Popular belief is that the Dutch introduced Bread Fruit to Sri Lanka thinking that the highly ‘heaty’ nature of Bread Fruit would either kill them or make them sick. But Sri Lankans ate Bread Fruit with Coconut and coconut neutralized the adverse effects of Bread Fruit. Ultimately it became a delicacy among the population. It is now considered to be very tasty and nourishing. <div style="text-align: justify;">With the whale watching season in Mirissa being in full swing and many local and foreign tourists gathering to the Mirissa harbor, The Sri Lanka Coast Guards had increased their vigilance in monitoring the implementation of Sea Mammals Observation, Regulation and Control Regulations. To ensure that the Regulations are adhered to by boat operators and tourists engaged in whale watching, the members of the Rohana Coast Guard base had been observing whale and dolphin watching activities in Mirissa since last year. The eastern boundary is defined by the famous long flowing Mahaweli Ganga, while the northern and western sides are bordered by the Amban Ganga and Dunuwila Oya respectively. The ancient tanks stand as evidence to the historical importance of the Wasgamuwa National Park and the religious sites are part of the story of Yudanganapitiya – the site where Sri Lanka's famous kings, Dutugemunu and Elara, camped during their mighty battles, in the 2ndCentury BC. The Wasgamuwa National Park has a history of being the place to observe the Sri Lankan Sloth Bear (a recognized subspecies of the Sloth Bear). The name Wasgamuwa is derived from the Sinhalese 'walas gamuwa' where walaha is bear and gamuwa means 'the woods'. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">Chital are large deer and they have a body length between 1 and 1.5 m (3.25 - 5 ft), a tail length between 10 and 25 cms (4 - 10 inches) and they weigh between 70 and 79 kgs (155 - 175 lbs). They are reddish/fawn in colour with white spots and a white coloured underside. Stags have three-pronged, lyre shaped antlers that they shed annually and they can reach lengths up to 76 cms (30 inches). They have several different vocalizations which include barking when alarmed, bellowing during the breeding season and fawns squeal when they are separated from their mother. They are mainly active during the morning, evening and night, and they rest during the hottest parts of the day.
